5 Phrases That Make Picky Eating Worse (And What to Say Instead)

Mom crouching to eye level with her toddler at the dinner table

You say them because you care. Most parents do. The problem isn't your heart. It's that these phrases turn dinner into a negotiation your toddler is built to win.

1. "Just one bite"

Try instead: "You don't have to eat it. It's here if you want it." Removes the standoff. Curiosity sometimes shows up when nothing is required.

2. "You won't get dessert"

Try instead: Serve a small dessert with the meal, or skip dessert that night without announcing a penalty. Food shouldn't be currency.

3. "You liked this yesterday"

Try instead: "It's okay if you're not into it today." Toddlers are inconsistent eaters. Logic rarely wins.

4. "Clean your plate"

Try instead: Trust their appetite. Your job is to offer; theirs is to decide how much.

5. "Good job eating!"

Try instead: Neutral talk about food, like "This chicken is crunchy," without praise for eating. Praise can feel like pressure to perform again tomorrow.
